1: Why We Care
JBHeartfelt Tours & Travels was born in Kabale, by people of Kabale. We’ve guided hundreds of travelers to Lake Bunyonyi, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Along the way, we have experienced the beauty of Uganda, but we have also witnessed a deeper reality that often remains hidden from visitors.
We have seen children lose parents and end up in the care of elderly grandmothers who struggle daily to provide school fees, food, and basic needs. We have met families living near some of Uganda’s most visited tourist destinations, yet they remain left out of the benefits of tourism. These experiences shaped our purpose and made us reflect on what tourism should truly represent.
We believe tourism should be more than taking photographs or ticking destinations off a list. It should leave footprints of hope in the communities that make these places so special. Every journey should contribute to something meaningful and lasting.
That is why every trip booked with JBHeartfelt Tours & Travels contributes directly to supporting vulnerable children and families in the Kigezi region.
2: How Your Trip Helps
We are not an orphanage, and we do not believe in separating children from their families. Instead, we focus on keeping families together and strengthening the systems that already exist within communities.
In line with Uganda’s Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, which promotes family-based care, we work directly with families in Kabale District and Rubanda District to ensure that children remain in safe and familiar environments while receiving the support they need.
For every tour booked with us, five percent of the profits are directed into our JBHeartfelt Community Fund. In addition to this, every donation made by guests is delivered in full to the families that we support, ensuring complete transparency and direct impact.
3: JBHeartfelt Community Support Program
Our Community Support Program focuses on real challenges faced by families in our region and works to provide long-term solutions rather than short-term aid.
Through our school support initiative, we assist children from vulnerable households by paying school fees, providing uniforms, and supplying essential learning materials. Many of these children are being raised by grandparents, aunts, or other guardians who struggle to meet educational costs, and through this program, several children in Kekubo and Nyarurambi villages have been able to return to school.
We also provide emergency food and medical support to families facing difficult times such as illness, food shortages, or crisis situations. This support helps households survive periods of hardship with dignity and stability.
In addition, we offer guardian skills training where caregivers are equipped with practical income-generating skills such as tailoring, craft-making, and poultry farming. These skills allow them to earn an income from home and gradually improve their livelihoods. Several women in our program have already started small businesses as a result of this training.
Our cultural experiences program connects visitors directly with the families we support. Guests are welcomed into homes to learn cooking, weaving, and farming traditions. A significant portion of the experience fee, seventy percent, goes directly to the host families, ensuring that tourism income reaches the grassroots level and creates meaningful impact.
Through all these programs, we maintain one clear belief: we do not remove children from their communities. We strengthen communities so they can care for their own children.
4: Our Standards
We operate under strict safeguarding and ethical guidelines in full alignment with Uganda’s Children Act. We work closely with the Kabale and Rubanda District Probation Offices to ensure that all children supported through our programs are properly identified and verified as genuinely vulnerable.
Every child we support is identified through local leaders and probation officers to ensure accuracy and accountability. We follow strict child protection policies, and all staff members as well as partner families sign agreements to ensure the safety and dignity of every child. No photographs are taken or shared without the full consent of guardians.
We also prioritize transparency and accountability by maintaining clear records of funds received and how they are used. Annual reports can be shared upon request, and donors are welcome to request receipts and updates.
Our long-term focus is sustainability. We aim to ensure that families we support gradually become self-reliant within a period of three to five years through education and income-generating opportunities.
5: How You Can Join Us
There are several meaningful ways to be part of this journey. When you book a tour with JBHeartfelt Tours & Travels, your safari experience automatically contributes to supporting a child or family in need. Whether you are visiting Bwindi, Lake Bunyonyi, or any of our destinations, your journey becomes part of a larger impact story.
You can also participate by bringing useful items such as school supplies, reading materials, or sports equipment through our Pack for a Purpose initiative. These items are distributed directly to families along your travel route.
For those who wish to engage more deeply, our community walk experience in Nyarurambi offers the opportunity to meet local grandmothers, learn traditional weaving skills, and share a meal with families. This experience costs UGX 70,000 per person, and seventy percent of the fee goes directly to the host family.
You may also choose to sponsor a child directly. Through this program, you receive regular updates every term, personal letters from the child you support, and transparent information on how your contribution is being used to support their education and wellbeing.
